Fantastic talk by @thomasfricke on energy consumptions of data centers... and the impact of AI on that.
The importance of data center efficiency is shown by the chart on the left of the slide, and is only to rise. Meanwhile, it's fascinating to see that carbon emissions per workload are 5 times lower on hyperscalers than running on-premise/internal data centers. That's a strong argument for cloud.
Meanwhile, clear physical limits are emerging on building new data centers, whether through lack of power and water, zoning restrictions and political pushback. Where are the compute resources going to come from to power this AI revolution?
