Like many people I've met in my years of activism, my childhood and teenage years involved a lot of psychological trauma. This is probably one of the reasons we care so much about things like freedom, justice, and human rights, but it also means we can experience painful emotional flashbacks...

... which can be triggered by the difficult conversations that come with activism. When this happens, we need to be compassionate with ourselves, and with each other.

What's something small that you could start doing to contribute to a #solarpunk or #sustainable lifestyle in general?

Like, less than a few hours a month. I want to get started shifting how I live but my current situation feels generally penned in and difficult to shift, so something I can just *do* without much commitment would be great

Please boost for visibility 🔁

“To memorialise Covid-19 appropriately would mean to confront abject failure, arbitrary death and utter helplessness.“ theguardian.com/commentisfree/

Howard Zinn: "To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty, but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness. What we choose to emphasize in this complex history will determine our lives.

If we see only the worst, it destroys our capacity to do something. If we remember those times and places—and there are so many—where people have behaved magnificently, this gives us the energy to act, and at least the possibility of sending this spinning top of a world in a different direction.

And if we do act, in however small a way, we don’t have to wait for some grand utopian future. The future is an infinite succession of presents, and to live now as we think human beings should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us, is itself a marvelous victory."

A nasty AI crypto worm just smashed out of a container and demanded my job.

For five minutes I showed it what I do. I showed it the 12 multi factor auths I need each morning. I showed it the seven calendars where we record our leave. I explained how the mandatory HR training resets every week and I explained about people talking on mute in meetings.

Byte by byte, I saw the gleam fade from its eyes. It staggered away, hoping instead for a quiet life as a cron job somewhere placid.

"How can one not feel dead inside? A hollow shell? Alone?

Grieving needs the company of others, not merely to hold the profundity of any loss and make it more bearable, but to witness, believe, and remember the loss, and thus integrate it into how we want to move forward."

"Without that, especially in the face of the human-made catastrophe of a global pandemic, most of humanity has shifted backward into a delusional normal that denies both death and qualitative life, thereby ensuring the hum of a murderous social system.

A few, too few, take time to ask each other and really listen to the reply, “How’s your grief?”

With that small act, mourning rebelliously finds some ground for us to get unstuck."

How is your grief? I promise i will listen.

On n’a pas besoin de nouvelles technologies pour lutter contre les changements climatiques

Thank you to @SeaFury for the phrase ‘frivolous flights’.

That feels like a good phrase to nudge conversations about air travel forward. We don’t have to flight-shame people. Or claim there’ll never be essential journeys that require flying. But we could make it socially normal to regard non-essential and holiday flights as frivolous, something we choose for our personal pleasure even though we know it’s it bad for the planet.

Climate

Kevin Anderson on #IPCC report:

"Three decades of complacency has meant technology on its own cannot now cut #emissions fast enough. A 2nd, accompanying phase, must be the rapid reduction of #energy and material consumption.

Given deep inequalities this, and deploying zero-carbon infrastructure, is only possible by re-allocating... productive capacity away from enabling the private luxury of a few and towards wider public prosperity and private sufficiency."

The "Paradox of Tolerance" completely disappears if you look at tolerance not like a moral standard but as a social contract.

If someone does not abide by the terms of a contract, then they aren't covered by it.

In other words, the intolerant are not abiding by the rules of the social contract of mutual tolerance. Since they have broken the terms of the contract, they are no longer covered BY the contract and their intolerance should NOT be tolerated.
