9/11, US imperialism
@syash @datatitian I want to do a write-up about all of these (we did this in several South and Central American countries) and give it to the high schoolers in my family. Americans are not taught about this in school and that's a problem
9/11, US imperialism
the funniest part about this is that the US did condemn Pinochet later but it had little to do with the rampant human rights violations. it was mostly because during the assassination of Orlando Letelier (a chilean diplomat exiled to the states for supporting Allende) Ronni Moffit (an american citizen) was also killed, and americans were outraged about one of their own being killed in their own soil
9/11, US imperialism
@syash @holly woah I didn't know anything about this
"Townley pleaded guilty and confessed that he had contacted five anti-Castro Cuban exiles to help him booby-trap Letelier's car."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assassination_of_Orlando_Letelier
9/11, US imperialism
@datatitian @holly literally all of this stuff was declassified way long ago and yet, people never learn about it because outside of Chile, where it's touched upon in (liberal & leftist) schools, this is taught virtually nowhere. definitely not in the US
9/11, US imperialism
@holly @datatitian i'm only as deeply educated as i am in this because i was born in Chile and still live here
sadly, even though the CIA documents that confirmed this were declassified forever ago, there's still plenty of misinformation and revisionism around so it's difficult to find accurate documentation on the US's interference without directly asking leftist chilean historians
9/11, US imperialism
@syash @holly @datatitian Hopefully these Chilean historians will write books on the subject, if they haven't already...
9/11, US imperialism
@witchfynder_finder @holly @datatitian there must be a lot of good ones out there already but i'm not a historian nor particularly well read so i don't have any recs. worth looking up, though
9/11, US imperialism
@holly @syash or even worse they're taught a false history that the Pinochet "brought democracy" to Chile, like in this clipping from this year in the New York Times
