@holly lol! They are right that Sneek is not Amsterdam.

In fact, I'd say the centre of Sneek is better than the cente of Amsterdam!

They really should remove cars from the Sneek binnenstad.

@holly oh my god Amsterdam isn't even that good compared to other Dutch cities what the heck

@holly @notjustbikes something I absolutely did not know: Amsterdam's bike infra only happened because of a huge amount of protest, community activism, and decades of organized political pressure by road users.

for whatever reason, I just assumed that transit was always that way there.

it wasn't! and the government only did it begrudgingly as a response to citizens.

@dko I guess you haven't watch many early Not Just Bikes videos? 🤔

@notjustbikes i only found out about you from Tom Babin ~3 years ago and must confess that the oldest work of yours I've seen was around suburbs being parasitic to cities on top of their other manifestly obvious problems.

thanks for the video recommendations and opening my mind to active mobility and urbanism over the years!

@holly @notjustbikes The streets are narrow, so we should have *more* car traffic? How does that make sense?

@holly @notjustbikes This is what the 2 streets they are temporarily closing down used to look like, less than a century ago (before filling in and paving over the canal and tram tracks)

How people ever got to the other side of town without a car remains a mystery...

@holly @notjustbikes Easy to respond to. "Maybe not, but this is certainly more Amsterdam than Los Angeles". Or any other car dependent hellscape that resonates.
