Our latest episode is all about Avatar: The Way of Water. We have LOTS of thoughts about white savior narratives, whaling, gender, and colonialism. But this time around? We actually disagree quite a bit.

It seems that some of the traditional hashtags for plant and fungus Fediposting are being forgotten. A quick recap:

Plants: #plantodon

Oh hey, I was just listening to Accuracy Third and who do I hear being interviewed but @nickfarr Really happy to hear about the push to replace those annoying camp generators with solar that can be deployed in local communities the rest of the year.

🚨BREAKING: Following noyb litigation, @meta (Facebook and Instagram) has been prohibited from using personal data for advertisement.
The #GDPR decision signals a major blow to Meta's business model in Europe, as Meta faces a € 390 Mio fine.

I cannot keep this to myself. There is a website (radio.garden) where you can listen to radio stations all over the world for free. No log in. No email address. Nothing.

When the site loads, you are looking at the globe. Slide the little white circle over the green dots (each green dot is a radio station) until you find one you like.

I have been listening to this station in the Netherlands and it absolutely slaps. I have no idea what they're saying but the music is fantastic.

The last episode of Slow Horses is this evening, and I almost don't want to watch it because I don't want it to end.

Recently I've started going straight to the publisher when looking for a book. Did you know they often have epub versions of their books for sale with no DRM?

I discovered this because I've been using Yomu (iOS epub reader) whenever I can since I no longer trust ereader apps that "own" your books (I've lost books when the apps went away). To use Yomu I need non-DRM epub files. So yeah, nice that I can get those straight from the publisher :)

The city of Amsterdam announcement of upcoming changes for 2023 includes this tidbit:
"Amsterdam will put its own Mastodon server live in January. This means that Amsterdammers, and the rest of the world, can follow the city's news via social media without being dependent on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram."

Night train from Brussels to Berlin via Amsterdam starting mid 2023! 22:30-06:48 is not long enough for a full restful sleep, although continuing on to Prague would be nice. europeansleeper.eu/nl/coming-s

I’m really really enjoying this book, The Dawn of Everything. I’ve just started it and they’re building an argument that I’m pretty sure is going to land at: native Americans were the source of the ideas of the Enlightenment. us.macmillan.com/books/9780374

To the person who recommended Strange World on Disney+ (I can’t find the post) thank you! Just watched it and enjoyed it.

10 Image #CaptionTips from a transcriptionist:

1. Any words are better than nothing.
2. You don't need to say it's "a picture of…" screen readers will already say it's an image.
3. Start with the framing or format (i.e. close up, landscape, meme, text).
4. Think about the reason you're posting the pic and describe that first, add background details if you have time.
5. Pretend you're talking to someone on the phone and want to tell them about this cool thing you're looking at.
6. Transcribe any and all text in the image, even if it's the only thing you do.
7. If you've described the image in your post, you don't need to copy and paste it again in the caption. But again, don't leave it blank, just put something like "as described."
8. You can add small subjective notes, but don't give too much interpretation of the image in your own opinion.
9. Caption jokes are fun, as long as they still describe the image objectively.
10. Use punctuation, and capitalize words properly. A lot of us have interacted with this tech when calling customer service or talking to Siri, so keep in mind that you're writing for a computer to read, and it needs all the help it can get.

There are a bunch of tiny raindrops on my phone screen and because of the lensing each one is a sparkly diamond of rainbow shimmers. And like a dork I just tried to take a screenshot to show y’all.

I got ready too early for my eye appointment so now I’m in Waiting Mode. So I’m filling this waste of time wondering why this mode exists, and maybe it’s because we have too much experience having a bit of time before the next thing and thinking: I’ll just get a little work done on this project until then. And suddenly it’s an hour past the time we were supposed to be at the thing. So now our brains treat this slack time as Emergency Don’t Forget The Thing Must Be Prepared mode.

one of my favorite things on social media is when people nerd the heck out about hobbies I don't know anything about.

I have a friend on instagram who's super into Breyer horses and like, I know fuck-all about either real horses or plastic ones but she does these explainers about the hobby that are always a delight to read

Post about your hobbies. It's okay to take up space. Delight somebody with details.
