@goatsarah exactly. I used to go back every 6 months, and the change was gradual enough to not notice it as much. But COVID meant I couldn't go for 3 years. It just broke the cycle of the boiling frog.
In a way I feel survivors guilt for having managed to escape.

@quixoticgeek @goatsarah I think I'd say that with the UK it's the depth of how much that gloom permeates people's lives too. Austria definitely has some similar national level malaise to the UK, a similar sort of instinctive anti-outsider sentiment (indeed I think Austria may be worse for that instinct than the UK), but because pay and jobs are better and more secure there isn't that sense of most people just being in this grim precarity grind that the UK has right now.
