Announcing airbreak, a toolkit to jailbreak inexpensive CPAP machines to turn them into emergency ventilators by unlocking all operational modes and allowing custom software extensions. airbreak.dev/

@th very well done! It scares the shit out of me when you say these things have a cellular connection.

@penguin42 @th Yep, they transmit your usage data so the insurance companies can bill you for the device if you stop using it.

@Gina @penguin42 @th Well, in the US, anyway. I don't know if that "feature" is used in other countries.

@penguin42 @th The cellular connection is mainly for medical personnel. It sends data of the amount of usage, leakage of the mask, and of course apnea–hypopnea index (AHI) of sleep apnea severity.

For example my machine is "on a permanent loan" from the hospital. I don't own it. The hospital requires at least 4 h/night of use for that.

On the other hand, it _also_ shares the same data w/ResMed, a US based company. So yeah, a security issue. Am I sharing my apnea data with NSA too, I wonder...

@jabsonik @th It wasn't the outward data that scared me; it was the chance of it getting attacked remotely.

@th too bad cpap machines aren't really inexpensive lol

@th omg this is SO COOL

HOW ARE YOU SUCH A BADASS 😅

@th That's awesome. My wife & I each have a RESMED AIRSENSE 10. I saw another hack which allows CPAPs to run with pure O2 injection for a $5 mod.

@th That’s really cool. Unfortuantely my CPAP is a ResMed S9, and it’s probably too old to be worth hacking. Truly impressive though :)

@th awesome! but i have difficulties with your SSL certificate, firefox is not letting me pass even under advanced options. is it signed by letsencrypt/... ?

@th Thanks for this! I've got the very same machine showed in the picture. Good to know I have a potential covid-19 ventilator in case of emergency among ppl near me.

I got mine _just before_ corona situation escalated. I've heard that now it's quite hard to get one for sleep apnea treatment. The machines are needed for covid-19 patients.

@th On the other hand, it should be a severe emergency, since: 'We want to be very clear here: this modified firmware should **not** be flashed on CPAP machines and used to treat COVID patients immediately.'
