@SuperDicq the VW Bug is enormous compared to the Witkar, the Netherlands' all-electric car sharing program of the 1970s.

@th Ah yes, I understand why it didn't catch on tho. It had a top speed of only 50 km/h and it they could only drive 15 km on a full charge. And especially at the time when nobody was concerned about fuel usage there was no need for these vehicles.

Nowadays almost every Dutch city has an e-moped rental program. They are a lot more practical, being even smaller than these cars and also seating two people of course.

Also Witkar still exists today and offers car rental in electric smart fourtwos.

@th @SuperDicq I like the idea of those, but I think the Dutch have hit on a pretty good solution for travel within dense enough areas since then anyway with their bicycle infrastructure!

@jfred @th I personally dislike he original Witkar idea. Too impractical compared to bikes and mopeds while they basically fulfill the same role.
@th Also I personally dislike the term "sharing" for any rental program. Sharing would imply that these cars are a common good. They are owned by a single body and you pay to use them. It is rental, not sharing.

Just like how Uber calls it "ride sharing", that's not what they do, they are a transportation business, like a taxi company.
