@th if on P1 were more of a thing in North America. About the best we can get with smart meters is the IR port and counting pulses.

And don't get me started on Green Button, the "open standard" for smart meter data which was clearly written by utility goblins (it's almost unintelligible to non-utility folks) AND it's not really open, needing $$$ for a licence to their weird Java-based XML doohickey
