Looks like .NL has reached a point where it has so much Solar that on sunny days the price goes negative. But not enough grid scale storage, so the sun goes down and we start burning dinosaur farts again.

@quixoticgeek it's weekend.

What we need more than storage is a change in the manufacturing industry. Start producing when energy is cheap instead of when labor is cheap (daytime). That will take the bulk of the isdue

@quixoticgeek thing electrical steelmaking, making salt and chlorine etc etc. I bet there are more.

@Schemerwoude I would have thought those were 24/7 operations. It's not like you can turn a blast furnace off...

@quixoticgeek akzo has been doing that for ages with the production of salt here.

And you don't have to turn it off suddenly. Sun and wind are pretty predictable on that scale ( a few days). There is plenty of energy hungry industry which can Easily scale up or down fast .....

@quixoticgeek storage of those amounts of energy is virtually impossible. Batteries are not going to cut it. Fine to power a house a few days. Not industry.

@Schemerwoude we have megawatt hour scale storage does exist. Perhaps not the gwh scale yet. We could use the spare electricity to make hydrogen. It's not exactly the most efficient, but if the energy is free and would go to waste otherwise... Or to drive a Sabatier process...

@quixoticgeek we need low drop hydro. Think 1m or even less.

Three words: IJsselmeer energy potential

@quixoticgeek I like the way you are thinking. Ardenne coast sound nice

@quixoticgeek

Batteries. Store the energy to use at night.

Only the fossil fuel orgs want to ignore this concept.
