HOT OLDER MEN in YOUR AREA want to know if YOU have been TOUCHING the THERMOSTAT.

There's an ugly storm brewing in EU software security legislation that could seriously impact open source software development. Those of you in the EU should read this article and do some lobbying. The goals of the legislation aren't unreasonable, but the conformance-testing burden would totally overwhelm the OSS community. The legislators need to rethink how they approach the burden and responsibility of auditing. blog.nlnetlabs.nl/open-source-

I’ve worked in and for hundreds of cities all over the world. The cities that are doing amazing and innovative things aren’t cities with ideal weather, or topography, or size, or demographics, or wealth, or regulatory systems/powers, or even politics.

They’re the cities that have stopped making excuses.

My parents have a Ukrainian refugee (except, Britain, so special not-actually-a-refugee status) and 9 year old son staying with them. If I understand correctly, they’re coming to our big family Christmas and I should probably get the kid something - any suggestions? I’m thinking, if I can find something in UK, comic/book in Ukrainian and English, or Ukrainian Tales in English?

Elon Musk says he'll make his own phone if Google and Apple de-platform him: gizmodo.com/elon-musk-alternat

I'd LOVE to see him try. (iOS has been developing since 2005-ish, and Android for even longer; the only way he'll get a software stack is to use Android as a platform or buy in a cheap also-ran from China. Either path is a quick way to lose a few billion dollars more without shipping a useable product. A dozen billion here, a dozen billion there, pretty soon it's all gone ...)

I used to think, ca. 2020, that Musk's increasingly erratic behaviour was simply the result of Grimes hooking him up with her dealer (going by her music she's definitely got a line on the good stuff), but these days I believe we're just getting ringside seats at a middle aged white guy's dissociation and disintegration. He's got enough money to buy anything that money CAN buy, but money CAN'T buy the most important things and the cognitive dissonance is driving him mad.

if you've ever messed up a dimension or a hole position on something you're building, don't be too hard on yourself.

at least you're not the Cisco design engineer who caused an entire product line recall by placing the mode button (which resets the switch if held) directly above an RJ45 port.

Oof, this hit me in the chest when I saw it, so am passing it on.

"the secret scientists don't want you to know!!" Dude have you ever met a single scientist? My scientist friends are desperate for me to know about the changing mating habits of Brown marmorated stink bugs. They're screaming at the top of their lungs to tell you EVERYTHING.

Economics: Humans only value things monetarily.
Sociology: Uh, I don't ...
Economics: Humans are always rational and value is calculated by a complex inner calculus.
Sociology: Uh, Psy, can you help?
Psychology: That's not how humans ...

This image was taken with a ED80mm refractor, ZWO ASI183MC camera, ZWO Duo Band filter and processed in PixInsight, including star removal using Starnet 2. About five hours of 4 min exposures with darks.

When I'm observing with large professional #telescopes, I always take the opportunity to capture #photography of the #night #sky. I drop my #camera somewhere in the #observatory, set the timer so that it takes #pictures automatically while I am busy hunting for #exoplanets. Before going to sleep, I collect my footage and process them while I rest.

This is an exemple #startrail I did 10 years ago from #ESO's #LaSilla observatory 🇨🇱, maybe one of my favorite

Enjoy !

Gruesome medical malpractice ahoy!

WHAAAT—

Via Ars Technica: "Officials in Wisconsin found a series of failures and federal violations at a nursing home where a renegade nurse cut off a man's foot without his consent and wanted to have it stuffed in her family's taxidermy shop and put on display to warn children to "wear your boots" in cold weather."
