Transport Policy - Flights

Just discovered via @jon & @giulio_mattioli: Banning super short-haul flights, while politically attractive, does less than I expected to save aviation fuel and carbon emissions. Food for thought on a Sunday morning :) #transport #TransportPolicy

When we started the #treebybike campaign way back in 2014, it was to prove to naysayers that their lack of imagination shouldn’t result in a lack of action.

Since then, it has become a cherished annual tradition for our family, marking the official start of the Christmas season.

I recently found this picture, taken in the 1930s at Le Monocle, one of the lesbian nightclubs in Paris at the time.

It's a great picture, with a lot of different people, absorbed in their own merriment, and at the center, my new reference for the concept of badass.

I don't know who she is, but she deserves a long, adventurous backstory -- maybe involving mutiny aboard an airship, spies, and broken hearts.

She's the only one looking at the camera, so the story is definitely about her.

This international train has absolutely no room for baggage. The overhead racks are so small I struggled to fit my jacket on it.

I heard this today, and it will stick with me for a long time. During a discussion about the sort of online tech that collects information about you in order to give you a better service, someone said this: "There's a fine line between a butler and a stalker". That is EXACTLY the problem.

You may not like it, but this is what peak Tooting performance looks like

did y'all hear about the British grocery store that installed some tilework to advertise fractal broccoli, and it was so beautiful it was immediately declared a world heritage site? if you get a chance you should absolutely go see the romanesco fresco at the UNESCO Tesco

Nevar forget the Quadro Tracker, the device sold to police agencies allegedly able to track anything, which instead of a circuitboard was revealed to just have ants glued to paper with epoxy en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quadro_T

We need to defeat Putin, the fossil fuel complex, the car industry and work on both climate change and climate justice. That is the task for us and the next generation. We have no choice!

There used to be a good bit of protected cycle lane past the junction with Grove Street, but somehow during the delivery of a cycle crossing of all things, it's been replaced with a right filter and straight ahead lane for cars? WTF 🧵

why call it bird site when ‘the fowl place’ is right there and a much better pun

All I can say about this is that archaeologists of the future are going to have their work cut out for them. Because memes don't fossilize.

For thousands of years, native peoples of the southeastern US harvested mollusks, depositing shells in midden mounds that grew to be literal islands above the surrounding marshland. Many of these mounds now host "hammocks", or groves of trees ecologically distinct from neighboring biomes. In Florida, many endangered tropical plant species are only found in these small handful of shell hammocks. Another way that native people enrich the environment through traditional practices. #ClamFacts

Mars is at it's closest to Earth. Here's a photo I captured of it last night using a 14" telescope. You can clearly see the northern polar ice cap! I'm working hard to learn to overcome the challenges of planetary photography to bring you the best images of Mars at opposition.
