Are stand-up paddle boards fun? They look like too much work to be very relaxing.

@th goofed around with them twice. Would not do longer trips, but if you have the opportunity to play with one, try it.
You can also sit down or kneel on them.
If you are not staying close to a beach, get a life vest.

@th I rented an "SUP" like this last weekend for the first time. We were paddling around for about an hour before we got physically tired. It's not super exciting but it was fun.

@th I tried one and I found it a bit silly. It's interesting to be a bit higher up as well as sometimes see further down into the water. But the ergonomics are terrible; combining the most awkward aspects of a gondola and a surf board. There's no way to carry much other than a small backpack.

Much of the appeal seems to be novelty or popularity. Although, I have noticed that many of them are inflatable and can pack down to something that will fit in the back of a closet or a suitcase. And there are quite a few people who just find it fun to wobble around a canal for a few hours from an uncanny perspective. Otherwise, I'd say a decent kayak is probably more versatile and capable.

@th
I have one of the inflatable ones and it's really a nice relaxing way to be on the water, get a light workout and be outside.

The relaxation factor can go down quickly when the water is rough though. It takes a lot more work to stay stable when there are some waves. And if you are constantly passed by boats leaving big wakes that's also no fun.

On flat and quiet water it's a lot of fun. And it's also a great way to have a quick swim where you are legally not allowed to swim 😅

@th
You can rent them almost everywhere. I did that first a few times.

On IJburg (does the beach there still exist?) was a good spot for that.

@th my brother lives on a lake and has a paddle board and a (very nice) canoe; he takes the paddle board out every time we visit but I've never seen him on the canoe. His local friends bring their paddle boards when they visit. He gives paddle board rides to the niephlings.

So, yes, apparently they are fun and practical when properly selected for the use case and rider. They don't move fast, they don't handle chop, and you are definitely getting wet.

It seems there's significant range in price and usability with both rigid and inflatable models.

@th You should try and rent one. I did paddleboarding a few times and a nice, not too straineous full body exercise.

Once you get used to it, it becomes fun. Just like kayaking etc. Great core body workout too.

@phooky do you think that group of paddle boards are getting together for their agile standup?

@th Yes, well I think they are at least. There's a technique to it that once you get some practice time and muscles built up it becomes easier.
