Did my bike prep for bike trip. Next is testing backpack.

One thing I'm wondering about but also fear people have strong opinions about is helmet. I've never ever bought one for cycling and wouldn't use them here, but cycling alone in the mountains is a different stories. So looking for helmet advice. What to look for?

@wmd helmets are designed for an impact before roughly equivalent to 20kph. Above that and you're not getting much benefit.

I wear one as a convenient place to attach a light.

I would say gloves are a much. Much. Much more important safety item, than a helmet.

@wmd so for 20+ I tend to wear fingerless cycling mitts. For 15-20 I have some full finger MTB gloves from decathlon. For 10-15 I have some yellow gloves the make of which has long worn off. 0-10 I have altura night vision gloves. Below 0 I have buffalo mitts.

I then Carry a pair of Rab Force merino liner gloves which I can wear with any of the above to boost their warmth a bit if needed.

I have a lot of different gloves...

@quixoticgeek@social.v.st @wmd@chaos.social This sounds like an entirely reasonable number of gloves. Although I've got old and thin and Raynaudsy, and probably need to investigate something with active heating for <5C. Maybe next winter...

@kim @wmd I should also say they can make the handle bars more comfortable and prevent blisters and sore palms.

@quixoticgeek @kim ah yes, another thing I need to look into, current handlebar things are not nice.

@th @wmd @kim actually they may be the GP2 on the Brompton. It's so long since I bought them I can't remember.

@quixoticgeek @th @kim always worried they'll get sticky under uv light. Happened to my last rubbery ones.

@wmd @th @kim mine have been on the bike for well over a decade. No issues with that yet.

@kim @th @wmd if I remember correctly tho, you and I have original M handle bars. Not the new style. So there may be differences in which GP2 Vs GP3 fit.

Also I think we both have the only M16R Bromptons (something my local Brompton dealer added to their system when I took it for a service).

@quixoticgeek@social.v.st @th@social.v.st @wmd@chaos.social Nahh, I have S-bars (the flat ones), which admittedly give a bit more flexibility for the mounting of Stuff.

@kim @th @wmd ah. That's a second variable then. S16R Vs M16R.
